Mike Derrow’s Tetraploid Seedlings

2008 DERROW UPDATE AND INTRODUCTION

EYE ON AMERICA x ANGELS SMILE c sm.jpg (88399 bytes)

Garden named “TOAST AND JAM”, this ANGEL’S SMILE * EYE ON AMERICA seedling is a heavily diamond dusted cinnamon orange with a purple eye and double edge of purple and gold plus the throat goes from yellow to green, deep in the heart.  This seedling will greet you fully open at 6 a.m. and even opens well in cooler weather.  The 5” bloom has tremendous substance, the scapes have good branching and budcount, it is fertile both ways and is a very hardy semi-evergreen.  This is a unique color for AS seedlings and this seedling is currently lined out for introduction in a couple of years. Hopefully TOAST AND JAM will be available as the name for this beauty as it seems to fit so well.

ALTERED STATE x KEY LIME ICE 3 sm2.jpg (162239 bytes)
This is a striking patterned seedling out of ALTERED STATE breeding.  The width of the outer band of white is ½ inch all segments of the bloom and the colors are very clear.  Another important trait if this bloom is that the petals are rounded at the tips instead of pointed like so many of the patterned seedlings out of ALTERED STATE.  One bad trait is that this plant is pretty tender – I’m remaking the cross and doing some variations to see if other, more striking patterns can be achieved with hardier plants under them.

                                                                                      DERROW - GREAT WHITE x NORDIC MIST 2a sm.jpg (75327 bytes)

This seedling is from two near white parents from the Stamile lines…finally, a white seedling with a great edge had bloomed in my garden and to top that, there is the beginning of inlaid ruffling too.  This is by far the best edge on any near-white, registered plant or seedling in my garden.  It is a 6.5” bloom with tremendous substance and will be carefully evaluated over the next few years; meanwhile, the pollen has gone on lots of other seedlings.

                                                                                     LUNAR EMPIRE 2 sm.jpg (145678 bytes)

This striking 4.5” bloom is a cross of MOON MUSIC * SUPREME EMPIRE.  Extremely heavily substanced and very flat in form, the blooms on this seedling carry the most diamond dusting that I’ve every seen…It is easily fertile both ways (unlike SE).  Obviously, the edge is just incredible for a northern grown plant, fully ½” of deep, pleated ruffles with hooks and small serrations that turn into large teeth with warm temperatures.  Very slow to increase.

                                                                                       BAYPORT X CHERRYSTONE 1a sm2.jpg (143430 bytes)

This is not just another cream with a rosy eye and edge – the size of this one is fairly unique at close to 7” and the cream color of the petals is much whiter than the photo, plus it’s out of BAYPORT breeding and carries the dormant trait of that parent.  It’s very fertile both ways, has a nice tall scape (much taller than BAYPORT in my garden) and I’ve taken it to BRAIDED EDGINGS, CLARIFICATION and the seedling below.

SABINE BAUR x SPACECOAST PICOTEE PRINCE 1 sm2.jpg (202246 bytes)        SABINE BAUR x SPACECOAST PICOTEE PRINCE 1a sm2.jpg (164884 bytes)

This is a very hardy SABINE BAUR seedling with a unique edge for the north.  SB shows a bubbled, purple edge but this one takes that one step further.  In places on the petal edge, it adds more white petal tissue outside of the normal edge, then it adds another purple picotee onto the new tissue.  This effect  is consistent indoors and out and happen on all petals.  There is rebloom and a decent scape too.  Crosses have been made into the CLARIFICATION lines for dormant genes, branching, rebloom, etc., and with BRAIDED EDGINGS.

                                                                                        SHIMMERING ELEGANCE x PEARL HARBOR 1 sm2.jpg (152538 bytes)

This seedling is a 7” lilac with a white edge out of SHIMMERING ELEGANCE x PEARL HARBOR.  Scapes are fairly tall at 28”, the blooms are held well above the foliage, it’s well branched, there is rebloom, the flower is resistant to rain and it’s fertile both ways.  This is a very special color on a very good plant, it resists cold well and opens wide by 7 a.m. in my garden.  This is an absolutely stunning flower in a clump and I’ve used it will many different colored parents.

A sib to the lilac seedling above, this one has the same traits – branching, budcount fertility and rebloom – in a different color and different form.  The second photo shows a clump of 4 fans in the greenhouse with 6 scapes…

There are green edges on white and pink tetraploid flowers but this is the first purple flower that I’ve seen with a green edge – out of S. Moldovan’s SALEM WITCH, the edge on this flower looks like little pieces of metallic green foil are embedded into the tissue though you can’t see the sparkling metallic effect in the photo.  This photo is of the first bloom and the sepals didn’t quill on subsequent blooms.  I know it’s fertile both ways but it bloomed late in the season so I didn’t get to spread much pollen.  There are 2 siblings to this that both show green edges but both are inferior flowers.  If the plant improves in the next couple of years, it will be a sure intro as the blooms are spectacular.
